GNC is coming....

You are not alone!

Beginning in March, the library will be hosting a Graphic Novel Club (GNC). The club will be open to Grades 7-12 and will run on first elementary break and Period 3 lunch. Games, drawing, and shopping for the library will be on the agenda.

Any questions? See Mrs. Rogers in the library. Or just show up at our first meeting. Listen to the announcements and watch this space for the date.

Bookman the Library Cop is Back!

Please return all books by January 23. This is the HDSB cut-off date for Semester 1 circulation. Please clear all fines by this date also.

Exceptions: Grade 11 and 12 lit circle books with extended due dates, and Grade 7 & 8 students

All Grade 9-12 students must have clear library records before writing exams!

HDSB Ebook and Audiobook Collection

The HDSB has embarked on a first for Ontario -a board-wide subscription to Overdrive! Now, students and staff can access both ebooks and audiobooks on personal computers and mobile devices.

FAQs

1. How do I know what ebook/audiobook titles are available?

Just search our library as you normally would and all electronic titles will appear mixed with print results for your search.

2. I already take out ebooks/audiobooks from the public library, how is this different?

It's not! Overdrive is the system used by our local public libraries.

3. I have never taken out these types of materials before, how do I get started?

Aldershot Library Book Swap is coming....

Start digging through those bookshelves, because the Semi-Annual Aldershot Library Bookswap and Sale is coming!

How it works...

Find gently used books that you wish to swap...beginning December 1, bring these books to the library, and receive a swap ticket for every book you donate.

Then, beginning on December 8, bring your tickets in to shop for "new" books to read!

On December 10, the books that are remaining from the swap will be on sale for 50cents/1.00 each.

The Aldershot Red Maple/White Pine Reading programs are now wrapping up for the year. Participation numbers are the highest yet. Nearly 10% of the secondary students voted for White Pine this year. Great Work!

The Sum of all Blogging...

Kudos, Betty Blogger -thanks to you, now I know more about Google Docs, Library Thing, and Picasa. I enjoyed the self-directed modules, but felt a bit "alone" in my blog.

Though I am sure that the Library Lady was reading each post faithfully, a few more comments here and there would have allowed me to feel more connected. I didn't feel it necessary to attend any of the drop-in sessions, as I had no real questions about the apps we were using, but would have liked some more feedback.

I am going to recommend Betty Blogger to friends and colleagues, should BPL have the foresight to offer it again.

I was excited to explore Library Thing -it has a lot of great user-friendly features. For example, I like that you can search for titles or authors and simply click the links to add to your personal library. The ability to write reviews, organize your titles and connect with other readers seems like just the thing for a bibliophile. I am looking forward to exploring the site further and seeing what it can do.

Google Reader: A Librarian's Best Friend...

Keeping abreast of what is going on in multiple disciplines, as well as staying current with world issues requires a fair bit of reading on a daily basis. I have used Google Reader for a while now, and find it a BIG time saver. If you are in the information gathering biz, the use of a feed aggregator is almost essential. However, if you just want to read the Globe and Mail every morning, bookmarking that site is probably fine!

For the Betty Blogger Picnic, I have said that I will bring Spam and chocolate bars. Why? Well, it is apparently the perfect meal for an arctic expedition:

I have used Wikis in the past, both personally and professionally. I find that if you give a wiki a chance, it is very user-friendly and helpful in organizing events. We used a wiki for our OLA Forest of Reading programmes this year and it was a good experience. Hopefully, next year more students will access this wiki. I have added the link to our OLA blog below:

The Most Dangerous Chocolate Cake...in the world!

I was sent this recipe by my cousin, who swore it worked...and it does -it is so YUMMY!

The Most Dangerous Chocolate Cake Recipe....in the world!

Ingredients

1 - Coffee Mug
4 - tablespoons flour
4 - tablespoons sugar
2 - tablespoons baking cocoa
1 - egg
3 - tablespoons milk
3 - tablespoons oil
3 -4 - tablespoons chocolate chips
Small splash of vanilla extract

Directions

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well . Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to share!)
And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day
or night!

Sharing about Photo-Sharing

After exploring Picasa, I can appreciate the features that it offers. Personally, I still have a difficult time sharing personal photos using an online application or service, due to fears about security and access. However, I will continue to use Picasa to search community images, and to edit and share images for work. It is user-friendly and has some great editing tools.

Strangely, many of the photos that I viewed did not have tags assigned to them -this one included. Were I to tag it, I might use some of the following terms: dreamcar, astonmartin, vantage, ford, gaydon, unitedkingdom.

I admit it. I like Facebook. Okay? Fine. I worry about students who appear to be hooked up to it all day long, like an IV. I don't think it should be an application that is used during class time in a school library. To me, it's like talking on the phone to friends, or passing notes in class -something you should not be doing. I like all the cool apps, the ability to stay in some sort of cyber-touch with anyone you've ever known, and the feeling that you are part of something global. I do not like the addictive nature of Facebook, and the friendly-feeling interface makes one forget that their personal information and photos can be seen by anyone. I know there are security settings, but let's be honest, if someone wants to see your stuff, they will. I NEVER put any photos of my children up for this reason.

Tagging? I think not.

Perhaps it's my daily contact with the Library of Congress headings, or the fact that I use the same computer all the time, but I did not feel an instant affinity with tagging. I can see the use of having a web-based storage area for bookmarked sites, but searching sites based on what other people may have tagged them as seems a bit random. I think it would be quicker to Google in the end. I guess it's all what you're used to.

I bookmarked 2 personal interest sites: The official UK site for my favourite show "Top Gear", and the homepage for the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. The tags I chose were:

No Cookies in the Library!

Ahh, YouTube -where would we be without your sweet siren call? The powers of YouTube can be harnassed for both good -and evil. As a teacher-librarian, I have seen countless hours of "time-wastage" being consumed through YouTube -multiple viewings of the latest stunts or "funny" videos. On the other hand, I have seen it used as a valuable teaching tool. I also have questions about the copyright implications of online streaming, but overall, I will admit to being a shameless addict. How else can I watch all the episodes of "Top Gear" that BBC Canada hasn't yet acquired??

P.S. Until you have stood before a group of students waiting hopelessly for a YouTube video to buffer, you will not know fear...

Hey kids, remember how teachers kept threatening you with summer school this year? "You know, you can choose to not do the work, but then that will mean *summer school*!" Well, it's hard to believe, but I have chosen to take the Betty Blogger summer school course -yes, it was voluntary.

You see, some people (especially teachers) are often struck with an illness where they want to learn for learning's sake -not because they have to! Crazy, I know. I wanted to take Betty Blogger to learn more about blogging, and by doing so, make the library blog even better for the next school year.

Let the learning begin! (Or at least the random clicking of the mouse)
